The prestigious Wall Street newspaper published a disturbing opinion article by Daniel Schwammenthal titled: ??Europe comes back to import hate towards the Jews.? The text also comes with a photography of the assassin Adolf Hitler in an interview with a Palestinian leader. This is one of the most worrying accusations against us Europeans, -and many times towards the Spaniards-, from the USA. According to this Europe lives within a special heritage of a Nazi culture that lets it critic any subject related to Israel.

Whether the thesis is true or not -and it obviously isn??t- is irrelevant, it projects such an image whether we like it or not. And without a doubt it truly hurts us as a country.

Daniel Schuwammenthal picks up a few facts to sustain the title:

«…In Spain, 46% have unfavorable views of Jews. Is there really no connection between this statistic and the fact that the Spanish media and government are among Europe??s most hostile toward the Jewish state? Is it just a coincidence that Europe??s largest anti-Israel demonstration took place Sunday in Spain, with more than 100,000 protesters?..» [more]

But Daniel Schwanmmenthal is wrong in his analysis since he forgets that the citizens of Europe were victims of Hitler??s rise, not his ally. It was specially dramatic in the case of Spain, since its beginning, Franco??s regime was the most terrible ally of the Nazi ideology and even used the weapons given by the genocide. Today we are still digging up people from our gutters.

It is difficult then that the parties that assembled ??the majority of the protest Europe against Israel? has that cultural heritage since most were leftist that always confronted the franquism and the Nazism. In Spain, people in facebook reminded me, there were thousands of Jews who fought voluntarily with the Republic. Even the present controversial politic of the Israeli government enjoys today the sympathy of Spain, in the right wing of course, even though traditionally it has ??considered the Jews a great danger for the Christianization of the world,? -as Luis Solana remembers. And so the Jewish people can show to have good friends in our country. As it should have always been.

To explain something this childish is necessary, even though I shouldn??t. What happens is that, as Nacho Escolar said ??the horrors of the Nazi do not have a comparison, and does not excuse the horrors of the Israeli government.?

The Spanish did not manifest against the Jews on Sunday, but against the politics of the Israeli government in Gaza. The Spanish do not hate the state of Israel, what they hate is the injustices that could occur in its creation. Spain is solitary to suffering, past and present, of Israel, but does not give blank checks to sponsor the conflicts.
